1000 Books Before Kindergarten – Get started today!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a fun, free and self-paced early literacy program for families with children ages 0-5. The goal is to read a thousand books with your child before the age of 5.
Why a thousand books? Studies show that reading to your child at an early age helps them develop important pre-reader skills that benefit them as they develop. Daily reading exposes children to hundreds of thousands more words, enhancing vocabulary, comprehension, and social skills, with benefits lasting into adulthood.
Why before Kindergarten? Research shows that cognitive processes develop rapidly in the first few years of life. In fact, by age 3, roughly 85% of the brain is developed. Young children are capable learners, and reading is a wonderful way to set them up for future success.
How to Get Started
-
Pick up a reading log sheet from the front desk at North Grenville Public Library or download a copy.
-
Colour or sticker one book on the log sheet for every book you read. Yes, you can read the same book over and over, and it still counts!
-
When you fill out a sheet, bring it to the library for a special sticker. Make sure to keep it so that you don’t lose track.
-
When you reach 1000 books, visit the library to get your certificate and a photo for our Reading Hall of Fame.

Annual Programs
Sam’s Annual Fishing Derby
Sam’s Fishing Derby is an annual event that happens at the end of June, where children of all ages gather at Salamander’s dock for a catch-and-release fishing derby. Participants bring their fishing rods and we supply the worms! The event is followed by a free BBQ or breakfast bar on the NGPL patio, hosted by the family of Sam Tobias and the North Grenville Public Library. During the fishing derby, participants contribute what they can to Sam’s Children’s Book Collection at the library, in honour of Sam and his love of books and fishing.
Please see our donation page for details on how you can contribute and help grow this wonderful collection of books!
